What Changed: From Trade to Domestic Real-Time Invoicing
Nigeria’s initial e-invoicing push began with a Price Verification System for international transactions to regulate under-invoicing and currency leakage. This system remains active for imports and exports exceeding USD 10,000.
Now, the FIRS has introduced a nationwide e-invoicing platform; FIRS-MBS, targeting all domestic VAT-registered businesses, across all sectors. The new platform enforces real-time invoice clearance for B2B and next-day reporting for B2C transactions.
This change marks a shift from trade controls to domestic VAT enforcement.
About the Nigeria e-Invoicing Mandate
Under the FIRS Act and Nigerian Tax Law, e-invoicing is now mandatory for all VAT-registered businesses in Nigeria. The new FIRS-MBS system requires every invoice to be cleared and validated in real-time before it is transmitted to the buyer, ensuring invoice authenticity and transparency in the domestic tax ecosystem.
- Applicable to B2B, B2C, and B2G transactions
- Invoices must be structured in XML or JSON (UBL/BIS Billing 3.0 standard)
- Invoices must include a digital signature and certificate
- Real-time pre-clearance for B2B; B2C invoices must be reported within 24 hours
- Platform: https://einvoice.firs.gov.ng/login
- Governed under: FIRSEA, Nigeria Tax Bill, and Tax Administration Act of 2007
- Non-compliance penalties include NGN 200,000 + 100% of tax due, and loss of input VAT credit
This system aims to standardize pricing, prevent profit shifting, and improve transparency across Nigeria’s trade and VAT networks.
