Campaigner, a part of the Ziff Davis Martech division, is the orchestration layer within a specialized ecosystem of industry-leading brands. Cygnet. One partnered with Campaigner to design and deliver a unified ecommerce integration for the Campaigner marketing automation platform, connecting WooCommerce and BigCommerce through a common event-processing pipeline. The result is a single, maintainable integration layer that replaced fragmented, platform-specific implementations and established a reusable architecture that accelerates future ecommerce platform onboarding.
Cygnet was a great engineering partner throughout the development of our BigCommerce, and WooCommerce integrations. Their team worked alongside our engineers over many months to help design, implement, and thoroughly test complex features such as abandoned cart recovery, back-in-stock notifications, and contact synchronization, while contributing to a scalable architecture that normalized the differences across these platforms. This was very much a collaborative effort, and Cygnet’s technical expertise, commitment, and execution were instrumental in delivering a robust and maintainable solution.
The challenge
Supporting Campaigner’s ecommerce integrations with WooCommerce and BigCommerce, Campaigner needed a reliable way to re-engage shoppers who had abandoned their carts, automatically notify customers when out-of-stock products became available again, and keep marketing and contact data synchronized across platforms — all without the manual effort and inconsistency of maintaining a separate, platform-specific solution for each store. As merchant adoption grew, the team also needed confidence that every customer-engagement event was being processed reliably, with enough visibility to catch and resolve issues quickly.
The solution
Supporting Campaigner’s ecommerce integrations with WooCommerce and BigCommerce, Campaigner needed a reliable way to re-engage shoppers who had abandoned their carts, automatically notify customers when out-of-stock products became available again, and keep marketing and contact data synchronized across platforms — all without the manual effort and inconsistency of maintaining a separate, platform-specific solution for each store. As merchant adoption grew, the team also needed confidence that every customer-engagement event was being processed reliably, with enough visibility to catch and resolve issues quickly.
- Unified integration – one shared platform connects WooCommerce and BigCommerce to Campaigner, replacing separate, platform-specific builds.
- Automated engagement workflows – Back-in-Stock notifications, Abandoned Cart recovery, and Contact Sync all run automatically through Campaigner.
- Centralized monitoring – structured logging and real-time dashboards give engineering full visibility into processing health.
- Extensible by design – new ecommerce platforms and engagement workflows can be added with minimal change to the core system.
The diagram below shows the flow at a high level: events from each ecommerce platform pass through the unified integration layer, which routes them to the right Campaigner automation, with monitoring providing visibility across the pipeline.
Challenges along the way
Bringing multiple ecommerce platforms onto one shared pipeline surfaced the kind of integration challenges any multi-platform rollout encounters — differences in how each platform structured its events, the added complexity of coordinating asynchronous processing, and the need to keep performance steady as event volumes grew. The team addressed these with platform-specific adapters that normalize each platform’s data into a common model, and expanded monitoring and alerting so that production issues are easy to catch and resolve quickly.
Results and impact
The engagement consolidated three customer-engagement workflows — Back in Stock, Abandoned Cart, and Contact Sync — into a single, event-driven platform supporting WooCommerce and BigCommerce, standardizing processing across ecommerce platforms and improving reliability and visibility across the board. It also gave Campaigner’s engineering team a reusable foundation that reduces the effort needed for future enhancements and new platform onboarding.
- Consistency – merchants get the same customer-engagement experience regardless of which platform they run.
- Simplified maintenance – one shared platform replaces separate, per-platform builds.
- Reusable foundation – the architecture now simplifies onboarding future ecommerce platforms and engagement workflows.
Looking ahead
With a single, event-driven integration layer now standing in for what used to be separate, platform-specific implementations, Campaigner’s engineering team has a reusable architecture that accelerates onboarding of future ecommerce platforms and customer-engagement workflows, extending the same patterns with minimal rework to the core system.
